Customs-House

Customs-House
SUNLAKA SATHAN or the current customs department, was built during the reign of King Rama V in 1890 to levy the inbound-tax which was called phasi roi chak sam. That is why it was also called Rong Phasi Roi Chak Sam. It provided customs services to foreign merchants who came to trade in the country. Inthe past, this area was known as the sountern gateway of the city. When the ships carrying merchandise from foreign countries entered the city they had to pass through this customs area which was located on the Bang-Rak and Khlong-San sides. They had the responsibility to check the ships arriving from the other countries. The Customs-house building was design by Mr. Krassi, an italian engineer who designed and took charge of the construction work. The building was therr-storey building situated at the bank of the Chao Pharaya river, and it was the most modern building at that time. Later, even when Chao Phraya Phasakonwong (Phon Boonnak), the firat general director of the Customs-house had prescribed the word Sulakakorn to be used and also had the words Sulaka Sathan engraved on the wall of the building, people still called it Rong Phasi. Nowaday, the old Customs-house buildinf become the Bang rak fire brigade station.
As for the Customs-house, it moved to the area of the port authority of Thailand in 1954. The only proofs which tell us that the Customs-house used to exist there were the old building and the Trok Rong Phasi(Rong Phasi Alley)
